Day 7 of the daily prompts:
Fall
The day the empire fell into ashes was the day my people celebrated their freedom. Yet, as I watched their faces around the campfire, elated and free, I couldn’t help but worry. There was still blood on my sword. My tunic was stained red. So were theirs. With blood comes silence. I don’t trust that silence. It will break. Maybe not a year from now, or even in decades, but in a century that blood and silence will have its revenge.
But I wouldn’t take back what I did. Nor did I regret killing my enemies. The empire had to fall.
Camera
The screen flickered on. I worriedly glanced at my camera. I hadn’t turned it on, nor was anyone else in the room with me. I watched as the pictures I had taken flickered from one to another like it was searching for something. I clutched my camera, trying to shut it, but the switch didn’t budge. I desperately wanted to turn it off when it stopped into a picture of the huge mountains and the rocky stream coming down the hills. I hold my breath. I remembered that day. I stared at the image, and the next thing I noticed, I was standing in the brook, my feet wet and cold. I gasped and dropped the camera into the water.
Prince
She had been readying herself all day. It was her wedding day. She glanced in the mirror at her perfect lace gown and the tiara on her head. She had never seen her prince, but today, the two nations would join together. She closed her eyes and imagined how he would look and what he would be like. Was he as rugged as his people were? Or was he like she was, delicate and light on her feet?
She opened her eyes and stared at the image in the mirror. She blinked and moved her hand, swayed her body. It was her brother, yet it was not him. It was as if she had become a boy, a man. Instead of wearing a gown, she had trousers on, and instead of a tiara, there was a crown.
“Your Highness,” a servant bowed as they entered the room. The man looked so much like the maid she had had. “Your princess waits for you.”
The Prompts are from the book: A Year of Creative Writing Prompts
I’m still avoiding writing my book. Maybe I need this little time away from it. Maybe it will give me perspective, and I can finish it with more clarity about how I want the ending to go.
Thank you for reading! Have a magical day!
