Day 43 Mulling Over Life And Writing

Day 43 of the daily prompts:

Sin

It had been his job for centuries to tempt humans to sin. He was good at it. He didn’t need to stretch his imagination to make humans choose the bad option. You could say he was naturally tuned to the inner workings of the human soul. He just had to glance at the rich chocolate cake with thick frosting at the bakery, and everyone in the line would get a second helping of it. He was good for business.

It was just that he was having doubts about the whole sin business. It was tedious work and pointless, and in the end, everyone ended up in Hell, anyway. Humans weren’t that good with each other and had lost faith in asking forgiveness. So, all he did was go through the motions.

What would cheer him up was good old-fashioned fear, terror, and respect. If he showed up in the cafe, he now enjoyed his late afternoon tea and cake, looking like the demon he was; humans thought he was coming from a comic con next door. They didn’t have faith. They didn’t fear. And in the end, they didn’t sin.

Strange Hut

She had to get away from the others. The entire class was full of idiots, and if she had to listen to one more storing from Trevor and what he did with his new bike, she was going to stab someone. Being here, lost in the woods, was better than that. She had been saying that to herself for over an hour. It was becoming clear that she didn’t know where she was, and she wanted nothing more than to be with her classmates, even to see Trevor’s stupid face.

She turned around and headed back. She had done that several times, but it was never where she was meant to go. The woods were thick, and there was just the eerie absence of human sounds. Only the birds’ chirps, the snapping of twigs, and the susurrus of the trees were present.

She took a step to the right, past the clearing, and saw it. The little hut in the middle of nowhere. She knew she should run away, but something kept pulling her into it. She took a step forward and waited for permission to come.

It came.

She stepped in and took a seat next to the fire. No one else was in the hut; there was just a voice telling her, “Now we can begin. You have arrived.”

Video Game

He hit the push button repeatedly to make the delivery bunny jump. He screamed at the game as the bunny crashed into the ground, and the lever started again.

“You fucking piece of shit!” he screamed and slammed his fist at the game console. The electric shock he got made him draw his hand backward and lick the burned skin. Then he lifted his gaze from the hand and saw the delivery bunny staring angrily at him.

“You are late,” the bunny said. It trusted ten boxes of pizza to him. “Now deliver, or you are fired.”

The Prompts are from the book: A Year of Creative Writing Prompts.

I’m glad I showed up yesterday to write despite being fatigued. It’s all that matters. Today, I feel more in tune with myself, and writing isn’t just a chore.

As I write these prompts and the afterwords for them, I have learned so much about my writing process and myself. I have learned to accept the bad days and appreciate the good ones. What we do depends so much on everything around us. All the small things seem to lead to bigger things, even when we don’t realize when we encounter them. I’m reading a book about chances, and I agree that there is a little we can control, but a lot we influence around us. In a way, it’s like this karmic balance. What we give to the universe, and others matter. And maybe if we give good things, then what we get back is good. Or everything is just random, and we have to surf the waves.

Thank you so much for reading! Have a prolific day!
