Crystal
You could call it her destiny. A blessing. But she called it her curse. The crystals had been her mother’s, and now they bound her to serve the kingdom as they had bound her mother too. Among them was one crystal that could free her, but it would mean that the king and his kingdom would fall. People would suffer only so she could be free.
The king and his men played around her. They knew her duty. They knew her place. She was neither a servant nor a master. They thought they could possess her. Some pursued her love and the power she held. They were too careless with their passion. She knew better than that. She had been a product of such love. Her father had been a greedy monster. So maybe she could be a monster, too. Care not about the fate of the mortal men. The king could die. He deserved as much. But his people, they had done nothing wrong.
The black crystal pulsed in her hand. She only had to smash it to free the power that would engulf the castle and the lands beyond. One day, it would. So the prophecy foretold. She could release the curse and end the torment.
The king usher walked into her chamber. The boy thought he could waltz in without knocking. She didn’t hear his words. They were demanding, as the king always was. She watched the boy and then let the crystal slip from her fingers, shattering into a million little pieces on the ground.
She smiled as the boy screamed.

The Prompts are from the book A Year of Creative Writing Prompts.
I can’t write the two other prompts. The first took everything from me, and the other felt too alien after immersing myself in the crystal story. It feels like I have limited capacity to write today, and I think I will use it to write my book. I feel bad about making such a decision because I’m a completionist or, more simply put, a perfectionist, but today, I choose not to be one. It’s a good choice. Isn’t it?
Thank you so much for reading! Have a lovely day!
