Day 67 Ruminating And Writing

Steel

Usually, these word prompts are easier for me, but today, my mind is drawing a blank. I cannot find a story for steel. Mostly because I’m full of doubts about what steel is, what iron is, and how it should be used. If this were a scene for my book, I would go and do research, but I have to go to work soon. I leave this word to haunt me.

Father

His father scooped him on his lap, swirling him in the air. He pressed his head against his father’s chest and felt the instant warmth and heartbeat. He had been there with him all day. This was what he had dreamed about for years. He had repeatedly told his mother that a boy needed his father and that he loved her, but something was missing, and finally, his mother had gotten him a real father.

His father put him back on the ground, and he watched the robot admiringly. It would love him for all who he was and never leave his side. Everything felt a lot easier now. The other boys would tease him for not having a father, saying things like that his father had killed himself, having only taken one look at him. There was a twinge of pain again, but it was all fine now. He had his father.

Wolf

The dog showed her its belly, letting her rub it.

“I take him,” she said. She had come to the shelter three times a week for a month now, and the bond between her and the dog was undeniable. It was bigger than she had thought it would be, and it looked scary, like a wolf would, but it was always so agreeable and loving that she was sure they would be the best partners.

They drew up the paperwork, and she could leave with the dog straight away. The shelter had already vetted her background, and all was well.

The dog jumped at the back of her car as they drove to the other side of the town. She lived near the mountain peaks, down in the valley. She had always wanted someone to share her woods with, and now she had him.

“What shall we call you?” she asked when they got home, and she had given it his meal. Now, they sat together on the porch, looking at the mountain walls rising high above the house.

“I have always preferred Mateo,” the dog said. There was a naked man where the dog had been. “Thanks for getting me out of there. They ran a tight security. I should have never gotten myself caught. But you know how it is, when someone sees you and shouts a wolf, and then you play a dog just that they won’t shoot you.”

“I—”

“Don’t worry. I won’t hurt you. But I have to ask you another favor. Do you happen to have anything for me to wear?”

The Prompts are from the book A Year of Creative Writing Prompts.

I was ready to give up, as I couldn’t write about the word’ steel,’ but the other concepts came together better than I had hoped for. They are not, of course, polished. But I got the idea there, and I’m happy about it.

I need to get to work.

One more thing: I got my sci-fi book back from beta readers, and now I can start the last rounds of edits and then get it out there. I’m so excited.

Thank you for reading my blog! I hope you have a lovely day ❤ It’s raining here, meaning it’s a perfect day!
