Beach
The days were getting colder, and the sea air was harsh. She longed for the days when people left her beaches alone, allowing her to roam freely in solitude, searching for fossils. She took her boots off and felt the wet, cold sand engulf her feet. She hated the long summer days. They were full of screams, the smell of sunscreen, and the constant motion of agitated people hungering for all in their reach. Summers were for staying in the woods away from all the commotion. There, the scattered harsh light was sieved through the leaves, making it bearable.
She was made for the long, cold days, the harsh winds, and for the sound of the song birds.
Loki
He cracked his knuckles, trying to control his temper. It wasn’t about brute force, as his brother would resort to. It was about intelligence and making sure everyone knew he was more than they were. Loki snarled. The human would pay for his ignorance. The businessman thought he could walk over him and think there were no consequences.
He grinned. It would be so easy. Humans were simple, and he had let one get under his skin for nothing. He had tried to sell the man fame, fortune, and greatness and run with his money, but the man was too clever for that. The businessman had been onto him like that.
Loki straightened his suit jacket and spread his smile even further. “I see,” he hissed between his teeth. “I think we misunderstood each other,” he dropped the smile.
“Sir, I think we are done here. I have nothing for you,” the businessman was ready to throw him out of his office.
“Oh, but Sir,” Loki enunciated the sir part like a mock, “It is not about what you have for me, it is about what I can offer to you.”
“I doubt that,” the man snorted with the self-assurance only a man who thought he could buy the world could.
Loki flashed his famous smile. “But I have one thing you cannot buy.”
That got the man’s attention. There was a tiny change in the man’s posture as he was ready to entertain the possibility that Loki was about to say something he hadn’t heard before.
“Go on then, you are here,” the man sighed, disinterested, but still keenly looking at him.
“Immortality,” Loki said.
The businessman snorted. “What kind of fool do you think I am?”
“Not a fool. A great man, who could walk upon Earth from here to eternity, and I have that thing for you.” Loki produced a vial from his jacket’s pocket. “All you have to do is fill this with the tears of a mourning mother, the seeds of Red Camellia, the blood of the giants, the song of the sirens,” Loki said.
The man’s eyes narrowed. “Are you taking a piss with me?”
Loki changed into a dire wolf. The man backed off, falling from his chair. Loki jumped on the desk and growled.
“What… what… what is it for you?” the man stuttered.
“All I want…” Loki changed back into a man and sat cross-legged on the desk. “All I want is to lie with your mistress.” Loki grinned as the man’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“For immortality?”
“What is there more than to know a love of a good woman?” Loki laughed. He would soon have the man by his balls, running around the world for a fool’s errand. There was no way a mortal man could become immortal like the gods.
Walk
Once in a century, she walked with the mortals. She was their goddess, their all. They worshiped her with every fiber of their being. Their love for her was strongest when she walked amongst them, even in her human form. She could feel it radiate towards her. But this time, there was a spark of something else. A discontent. A modern thought about… electricity, atoms, and a hint of something that made her angry: psychiatry. Humans and the world were made of her and not of these currents and atoms. They were hers.
She screamed and stomped her leg on the ground. People stepped around her, whispering about mental illnesses.
The Prompts are from the book A Year of Creative Writing Prompts.
I cut the last one short. I wasn’t sure where I was going with it. Writing these prompts took longer than I planned. I have to switch into editing before I leave to climb. Writing my plans for the rest of the year today made me feel good, like I’m no longer floating in uncertainty. I’m planning to get my sci-fi book out by December. I know I can do it. I just need to focus more on what’s important.
I often write about looking for fossils on the beach. I wish I lived somewhere where that was possible. We don’t have similar fossil deposits here in Finland. I love the images of those cold seaside beaches that the British and Americans have. I long for those places.
Thank you for reading ❤ Have a prolific day!
