Day 118 Ruminating And Writing

Mars

She switched the hop-plate coordinates to Mars. It was her only hope to flee the Empire. She should never have stolen the tech, but it had felt wrong to give it to them like that, knowing what they would use it for. She knew that she would have to run to the end of the universe to hide from them. For now, the red planet would have to do. She would have to change her appearance, the way she walked, and the tone of her voice. She could no longer be Rey Medina, the scientist. Now on, she was the fugitive.

The coordinates took her to her friend’s lab on the red planet. There she fled to the streets of Mars. To the back alleys, where the government’s feed was already cut off. She had enough money for a few jumps and a cosmetic surgery, but then she would have to think of a way to stay sheltered and fed.

Wives of Two Brothers

She couldn’t stand the woman. She had said as much to her husband. The werewolf was insufferable. It was painful to watch her trying to be the alpha when their mother-in-law clearly wasn’t willing to give up her position. She was glad to be a mortal among the wolves. One day, that wouldn’t be the case, but she wasn’t yet willing to give up her humanity. It was just that when things got bad, her sister-in-law would bark at her. The woman could smell her detest, and it would always lead to an argument. One day, she might kill her if she wasn’t careful.

She made a habit of staying out of her way at the family gatherings. Today, that would be impossible. They would have to stay together all day. It was the annual family hunt, and she needed a babysitter, and the family kept pushing the two sisters-in-law together. She was sure they did it just to see who would come out alive from the woods.

The Prompts are from the book A Year of Creative Writing Prompts.

Hi again! I’m back from visiting my family up north. It was so nice just to be without needing to do anything. I spent time with my sister’s children, playing, jumping, and swimming. But it also feels good to be back home and to be able to write. I edited my book on the train both ways, but otherwise I didn’t work for a couple of days. My mind feels rested, ready to write again and climb. Though I’m not sure about the climbing part. The wrist is still broken, and I will see a specialist today. Let’s see what they will say.

I liked the Mars prompt. The Wives of Two Brothers feels forced to me. I wanted to put another spin on it, beyond the basic human relations, but it didn’t come out as I wanted. Also, I was ready to give up on the Haiku prompt. My ear doesn’t differentiate how many syllables there are in English words, so I had to use an aid for that. I’m not sure if it is because English is not my native language or because of my phonetic dyslexia. Either way, I’m happy that I managed to write it anyway and hopefully get the 5-7-5 right. Let me know if that’s not the case.

I still sometimes wish to see where the prompts would lead, but I have accepted the fact that they are just meant to be exercises on writing rather than full-blown novellas. The Mars one has potential. I would like to know what technology she is unwilling to share with the Empire. It has to be more than just a basic bomb in a world where you can use hop-plates to travel between planets. Also, it would be nice to know who she meets as she flees through the galaxy.

Thank you for reading ❤ I hope you had a great weekend. Have a lovely day!
