The Scent Of Roses In The Air
Here, the olden kings and queens reign over their countries. Here, they ran around the gardens, the scent of roses in the air. Here, the halls flowed with blood when their reign fell. She had seen history played out before her so many times that it all began to blend together. At first, the time machine had been a blessing. She was able to witness history unfold, but now, after sailing through time, all she wanted was to find her way back home. But she wasn’t sure where that was. It was as if her body had lost its timeline, and all she could do was roam in the past.
She had tried to jump into the future, but the machine acted erratically and kept her looping back to ancient times. It was as if she had a mission to fulfill. Mission, she wasn’t privileged to know.
Luck
Something brushed past him, his hand caught in the thin air, feeling fabric between his fingers, but then it was gone, and he was left in the alley alone in his spit and sweat. He closed his eyes and let his drunkenness lull him into the haze.
But that was not what the world had for him. The brief brush pivoted him to a different path. The alcohol drained out of his blood, and for the first time in years, he felt his mind clear. The words in his head didn’t stammer or sway. They wanted him to get up from the alley and take a first step to the bright new world, where Luck was on his side.
The first thing that happened was a woman with a basket full of food knocking him down. She was so embarrassed that she left the contents of the basket at his disposal. He felt the wood churn in his stomach that had not seen anything but alcohol in ages. The food settled there, Luck making sure it did.
From then on, if he glanced at a thing, somehow the universe found a way to get it to him. He got a house, a car, new clothes, a haircut, a bath, a dog, a phone, a huge company, an airplane, a beach house, a Capuchin monkey, and a new haircut… All that he wished for.
A year from the brief brush, he had everything he could have ever dreamed of, yet the alley and his past life haunted him. He could see how it might be now. This life of his felt like he had robbed it from someone. The sand under his feet in the paradise he now called his home felt like an illusion. What if he had died that day, and this was an afterlife? What if the someone he had brushed would come back and take all this away from him? What if he wasn’t still content with his life with all the things he had?
The Prompts are from the book A Year of Creative Writing Prompts.
My mind feels empty today. I didn’t sleep well last night. It took me a long time to fall asleep, and I slept restlessly.
Thank you for reading ❤ Have a wonderful day!
