Foul

She curled into a ball, hearing the neighborhood kids chant her name again.

“The foulest of the foul…”

They called her green-eyed monster. They laughed at her when she growled at them. She was never included in their games.

She had found a perfect nest in which to hide from them. A perfect nest where she could spend all day without her mother knowing that she wasn’t playing nicely with the other kids. It would devastate her mother to know that whenever she ushered her out to play with the other kids, she never did. Her mother did it out of kindness. She couldn’t take that away from her.

The chant had stopped now. The other kids had moved on to play hopscotch.

She swirled her hands and watched her green skin, covered with sores. She wished for nothing more than not to be a goblin. She wished she were like the other kids: gnomes, elves, dwarfs, orcs, gnolls, anything but a goblin.

Her family was the only one in the neighborhood. They owned the corner apothecary, which was the first in the city. It was always full of customers, and whenever she helped out, people were kind to her. It was as if she weren’t a goblin. She wished her mother would let her stay in with her and make the brews and pack the herbs. She didn’t, and here she was, the foulest of the foul in her little makeshift nest, playing with herself and the rats.

Trick-Or-Treat

Siblings go on their first trick-or-treat with their family, and the boy gets scared of a witch, and the little girl attacks it. I skipped this one.

Baked Goods

Neighborhood stay-at-home wives compete against each other with everything. I skipped this one, too.

The prompts are from the book A Year of Creative Writing Prompts.

A lot of skips today. I had a slow morning as I beta-read a book. So, I didn’t have the stamina left to write. Though I saw the foul word instantly, I knew it was about goblins. You might have seen them a lot on my blog. I’m partial to the little fellows. They get all my sympathy. Sometimes I feel like a goblin. So out of this world, and what the demands are for people. I feel like nothing makes sense, yet here I am, a goblin, trying to get through the day, out of place in a world of elves and dwarves.

Now, I’m off to prepare my lunch.

Thank you for reading ❤ Have an excellent day!
