Book Review: Time Travel: A History by James Gleick

I had fun with this book, and my mind kept thinking weird new stories to tell while I listened to it. So you could say the book was inspirational. But this is one of those odd books that easily disappoint people, and that is trough a misconception of the concept of time travel combined with history. They might think this is about the science behind time travel, and it partly is, but mostly the book goes over the ideas on how time and time travel have been handled in literature, especially in science fiction. And this should be because there is no actual history of time travel. There is speculation and concept of time and how time, space, matter, and everything comes together, and that is the salt of the book. It goes over the ideas both in writing and science how people have puzzled over time and later time travel (the quest for immortality.) But I get why this book might disappoint people because this is from the author of Chaos, a mind-altering book that brought the history of chaos studies and the concept into the public’s radar.  But you get the same painfully detailed account.

But because there is no actual science of time travel, this book pieces together what it could be and the ideas we have had about time travel through science fiction stories. Again, I get why some would see this as a disappointment. What does science fiction has to do with actual science and the world we see in front of us? The answer you will always get from me is a “whole lot!” Science fiction can shape the world and dream of new realities. History has shown that it is a revenue where scientists can test out their hypothesis, and some of those ideas have sneaked into actual science and recent inventions and even to philosophy. Not forgetting the fact that science fiction has inspired generations to dream and to pursue a career in science. So I would say this genre fiction has an integral part in our world’s history and culture. I read somewhere that China has encouraged their citizens to write science fiction and pursuit along with those lines to enchant its science because there is a correlation between scientist and reading science fiction as a child. Science fiction gives the ability to imagine realities, but also it provides the ability to leave one’s mind open for a variety of possibilities, which is vital in science. Sorry about this rant. It is just that I am sometimes saddened by the fact that people dismiss science fiction quickly without truly comprehending how important it is to our modern life and to the gadgets they held so dear.

Thusly, what James Gleick did with Time Travel: A History book is not just cultural nonsense, but an actual glance what we as a human race think about time and time travel. This was a fantastic book, but those who see science fiction with no relevance, then please go ahead with this book with an open mind and see what it can truly offer to our thinking.

Thank you for reading! Have a great day, and if you break the fourth dimension, please let me know!
