Gold

The red, oozing blood sparkled in the desert sun. It was scattered all over the stony ground, leading into the cave systems. The hunt was closing to its end, and he could taste the gold between his teeth already. He could picture all the whores he would get to play with. Their tiny bellies and huge tits, their long hair to twist and pull.

He licked his lips and got a mouthful of sand on his tongue. He spat on the ground and tightened his hands around the leather on the hilt of his sword. The other man followed his example. The man was new. The skittishness was making his hand tremble, and he stumbled on the stones as they descended into the cave. He wanted to tell the man to grow fucking balls. That if he wanted to survive as an enforcer, he had to have a stronger stomach, or he would be the one himself to cut his throat.

He took the lead into the dark cave. He had seen these things play out many times. Someone owed their boss money and favors, and they thought they could skip town just like that. Many fled to the desert, thinking no one was foolish enough to follow them. He was. He had done this same dance countless times. He would do it again and again for the whores and the week’s leave he earned every time he dared the scorching desert sun.

The blood was leading them deeper. He listened to the rattle of the other man’s teeth. He stopped and slammed his fist into the man’s face. The man flew on the dirt. He stood over him and watched the newbie scoot away from him.

He was about to kick dirt on the man’s face, but something flashed in the man’s eye, casting a shadow. He spun around and saw the dust howler, the desert devils with huge claws and sharp teeth, rise above him. He rolled to his side away from the claw that was coming down on him. The devil howled. The other man still lay on the dirt, unable to move.

“Move you fucking clown,” he roared.

As he got up to swing his sword, he saw their mark, crawling behind the dust howler, back out into the desert.

Fucking shit, he thought, and turned to face the howler. He had no choice. There went his gold and whores.

I have to cut this short. I have to leave for work. In two weeks, I will have my summer vacation. I can’t wait. I don’t have any insight into today’s writing. Mostly because I feel the need to hurry to work. Also, I’m restless because I don’t know whether my first client canceled the meeting or not. They can’t seem to make up their mind.

I had fun writing today’s prompt. It was a nice scene, and I liked writing a different kind of character than I usually write. What I got today was lyrical, fantasy with rebirth, and done from a limited third-person perspective. I never got to the rebirth part, but it was coming. However, I’m not sure how. It had something to do with the man they were pursuing.

Thank you for reading! Have a day of lyrics ❤
