He had known lands between lands. The little sacred places that had their own universe without the universes of others. Here in the lighthouse island, he had found his own land between lands—a place to exist without the governance of others. Here, the sea made its rule. Here, the wind had its say. There was something more tangible this way, out of the mainland. Here, he remembered his childhood and how slow it had felt. Out there, time rushed faster and faster with every invention that got packaged and sold. Not here. Here, there was only the bedrock and time to look at the stars and wonder about the point of the universe. He had learned that without time, there was no thought. On the mainland, the constant entertainment of the cities had made people lose their minds. There was just intellectuality of superiority without substance, without understanding—only words echoed after words for the fancy.
He was glad he had chosen the island, yet he was glad he had seen enough of the lands with sparkling cities to know the value of his little lighthouse island. The visitors always asked if he was lonely. He pointed at the terns and the razorbills, and on a good day, at a seal sunbathing on the shore.
“And I always have my wind,” he would add, and get odd looks.
He was accustomed to the odd looks. They were as they were. He could do without the visitors, but it kept him fed and the place running, and he liked it when they left their books behind.

My mind is at the moor, at the starry skies, at the sea. I have nothing more to add. This is one of those days I would love if time flowed slowly; that there were no promises or duties, just a moment to exist in. Yet, I made a promise, thinking it would be important to exist within the parameters of achievements and doing, and I will keep that promise. Maybe I’ll sneak in the moment of now.
What I got today was a voice-driven historical fiction, voyage and return, done from a limited third-person point of view. I’m not sure what part was historical, but let’s not fuss over that.
Thank you for reading! Have a slow day ❤
