Soldier

Defense was far from my mind here on the ruins of the alien planet. I had just torn off a chunk of the city, rendering their defenses useless. We were taking the planet over with our bare, clawed hands. And only now, here in the ruins as I watch the corpses of my enemies, I remember they weren’t the enemy, that we had become the monsters we suited.

I could excuse myself by saying they made us shadow selves. Monsters, and we had let them. We did it to defend our planet from the invaders. I still remember the first war — the first time I put on the exoskeleton more powerful than any man or beast, the first time I knew there was a vast universe out there with hostile aliens — I was happy. I more than willingly killed the alien invaders with my bare monster hands. It was the proudest moment I had ever experienced. I had defended my planet, my family. I still would do that over and over again in a heartbeat. But this was something different.

I glanced at the other men suited in monster suits around me. Some had madness in them, and I wonder if they had figured out how absurd this was a long before me. Still, they had followed me into the fight. And we had won. We had taken yet another planet for humankind, for the corporation that had been sanctioned to go to space and defend humanity.

I feel groggy. I just woke from my morning nap. I’m still suffering from the bad night’s sleep a few days ago, even though I had a good night’s sleep. I was almost sure that nothing would come of this story, but then I found the voice that would carry on.

What I got today was a conversational sci-fi story about rebirth, told in the first-person.

Thank you for reading! Have a clear day ❤
