Day 115 Writing Short Stories

Freaky Things

Is it bad if you accidentally release a highly mutating virus into the world that can alter human DNA just like that?

And should you perhaps contact the proper authorities about what just happened?

I’m just asking for a friend who accidentally glazed a donut with outer space virus that they happened to be working on in the lab, and that said donut got gulped by a mouse that somehow got super mousy strength and intelligence and broke out of your laboratory.

That said friend said nothing, filing it under a freaky accident, but then all the rats, squirrels, and homeless around the hush-hush-secret laboratory in the middle of a nowhere town started showing symptoms like said intelligence and strength, with a slight side effect of sociopathy.

There were signs like squirrels bombarding the citizens with everything they could get their hands on, holding the local bakery hostage, and running people out of their lovely homes. Rats and other critters followed the example. And the homeless, don’t get me starting what happened to them. You can say that one of them was running the whole show as soon as she noticed what the heck was going on.

So, any ideas what my friend should do? Luckily, the town is in the middle of nowhere with hard-to-reach terrain, and for now, it seems those affected by the virus have stayed within its limits. But… you know how it is with viruses and experiments of this scale with unpredictable outcomes.

Ha, this was fun to write. I don’t think I have written anything quite like this, and it felt fresh. What I got today was an experimental science fiction comedy written in the first person. I think the story could have a proper plot: what happens from there on, drawing in the whole town and altering its citizens. It’s already playing in my head, and hopefully in yours. I would love to write more, but I have to leave for the office in the next town over. I changed companies, and the slow days are soon over, and I have a full list of clients to see. Next Tuesday, for example, will be tricky with writing and my morning exercise, since I have an early-morning client.

Thank you for reading! Have a freaky-deaky day, and see you tomorrow ❤
